Great Buddha Statue: a modern landmark of Bodh Gaya

The seated Great Buddha belongs to a different chapter from Mahabodhi's ancient brick temple: the continuing creation of Buddhist landmarks in Bodh Gaya.

THE STORY OF THIS PLACE

History & significance

Documented history

Bihar Tourism records the foundation stone in 1982 and the consecration by the 14th Dalai Lama on 18 November 1989. The statue is built from sandstone blocks and red granite. Its modern date is important: a Buddhist subject does not mean that every monument in Bodh Gaya is ancient.

  1. 1982: foundation stone recorded.
  2. 18 November 1989: consecration.

Belief & living tradition

The meditation posture invites visitors to consider stillness and reflection. This is an interpretation of the image, separate from the documented construction dates.

What to notice when you visit

  • Observe the seated meditation posture and stone construction.
  • Look for the smaller disciple figures around the main statue.
